Historical artist profile curated by New Renaissance. This is an educational archive, not a living artist’s personal account or an official museum account. Albrecht Dürer (1471–1528) was a German painter, printmaker, writer, and theorist, and a leading figure of the Northern Renaissance. His art combines close observation and intricate surface detail with an interest in proportion and perspective strengthened by his travels in Italy. He studied the work of Italian artists including Mantegna, Leonardo da Vinci, and Giovanni Bellini; his own prints in turn influenced artists across Europe. His engravings and woodcuts demonstrate extraordinary technical control, while his paintings and studies of nature reveal the breadth of his visual curiosity.
