Raphael (1483–1520), also known as Raffaello Santi or Sanzio, was a leading artist of the Italian High Renaissance. Born in Urbino, he developed a style shaped by Perugino, then studied the work of Leonardo da Vinci and Michelangelo in Florence. Called to Rome in 1508, he created frescoes for the papal apartments, designed tapestries for the Sistine Chapel, and painted portraits and religious subjects. His work is celebrated for balanced compositions, graceful figures, and expressive human relationships. He died in Rome at 37 and was buried in the Pantheon.
