Jacopo Robusti, known as Tintoretto (1518/1519–1594), was a leading painter of sixteenth-century Venice. His professional name, meaning “little dyer,” referred to his father’s occupation. He supplied paintings for churches, confraternities, government buildings, and private patrons. His work is distinguished by bold brushwork, dramatic movement, unusual viewpoints, and inventive approaches to biblical narratives. Alongside Titian and Paolo Veronese, he helped define Venetian painting, and his energetic handling influenced artists including El Greco and Peter Paul Rubens.
