What Is a Patron?

What Is a Patron?
A patron is someone who supports an artist, a creative project, or a cultural institution, helping make its work possible.
That support can take many forms: commissioning a painting, funding an exhibition, contributing to an artist residency, or providing space and materials for new work. Patronage can support a single project or develop into a relationship that lasts for years.
Collecting and patronage often overlap. A collector who purchases an artist’s work may also commission a new series or help fund a public installation. Patronage can extend beyond acquiring an object to supporting the conditions in which art is created and shared.
At its best, patronage gives artists the resources and freedom to pursue their work. It involves trust, clear expectations, and respect for creative independence.
You do not need to fund an entire museum to participate. A contribution to a local exhibition or an artist’s first commission can make a meaningful difference.
