What Is a Collector?

What Is a Collector?
A collector is someone who acquires and brings together works of art, guided by curiosity, personal taste, or a particular interest. A collection might focus on one medium, follow an artist over many years, or connect works from different places and periods.
You do not need a large collection or an enormous budget to begin. It can start with one work you want to live with and a desire to understand more about the person who made it.
Collecting also involves care. Keeping records, learning the story behind a work, and preserving it are part of looking after what you acquire. Buying directly from living artists or their galleries can help sustain their practice and make future work possible.
Over time, a collection becomes a record of attention: what someone noticed, valued, and chose to keep.
What was the first artwork you collected, or what would make you want to start?
