“Neither from Here, Nor from There”, This piece carries a double entendre, exploring the complexities of bicultural identity and the struggle to find a place of belonging. It speaks to the experience of navigating two cultures while striving to create a better life for oneself and one’s family, yet feeling as though one belongs entirely to neither.
On a deeper, spiritual level, the work also reflects the internal conflict between the temptations and passions of sin that exist within the world and the pursuit of a righteous life in devotion to God. It explores the tension between worldly desires and spiritual conviction, and the continuous struggle to remain faithful amid that conflict.
The piece additionally pays homage to the 1988 Mexican film Ni de aquí, ni de allá, whose title translates to “Neither from here nor from there.” This sentiment serves as the conceptual thread connecting both interpretations: the feeling of existing between worlds, never entirely belonging to either, whether culturally, spiritually, or personally.
